Concepts from Physical Chemistry and Physics are required for a number of questions in Section III of the GAMSAT. A number of these
questions require some mathematical calculations. These questions test your skills at mathematics. The GAMSAT is not a test of your accuracy at mathematics but rather the GAMSAT tests your skill at mathematics. This means that the
you estimate a fairly accurate answer.
No Calculators
It is extremely important to note that the GAMSAT does not allow the use of a simple or a scientific calculator. The level of mathematics and the questions containing mathematics in the GAMSAT does not necessitate the use of calculators. All necessary mathematical values are given in the stimulus or in the particular question. Mathematical values which are provided are scientific constants, mathematical constants, logarithms and values of trigonometric ratio, such as sine, cosine for standard angles. Mathematics concepts for GAMSAT
The following concepts of mathematics are necessary for Section
III of GAMSAT
·
Basic Arithmetic
·
Indices, Law of Indices
·
Logarithms, Law of Logarithms
·
Trigonometry
Basic Arithmetic
Working knowledge of basic arithmetic is very necessary. You should be able to estimate a fairly accurate answer by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing two or more numbers. In order to have required confidence with these concepts, it very important to know multiplication tables well. Knowledge of multiplication can help multiplying and dividing two or more numbers quickly.
Always divide before multiplying numbers.
Indices
Knowledge of Indices in its manipulation is very necessary to correctly estimate the index of number especially the index of 10. In addition to this, knowledge of Indices and laws of indices helps correctly place the decimal point in a within a number .Please do familiarize yourself with the four important
laws of indices.
Logarithms
Logarithms are necessary for questions with Acid and Bases as well as for a number of concepts in Physics. You should be familiar with logarithm laws, difference between arithmetic logarithm and natural logarithms, as well as concept of antilog. Log value of numbers between 1 and 10, not including 1
and 10 are always provided in the GAMSAT when necessary.
Trigonometry
Trigonometry is very vital for questions of Mechanics and Electromagnetism from Physics. You should be familiar with the tree basic trigonometric
ratios, sine, cosine and tangent as well as what they represent so that be applied to diagrams given in the stimulus for questions in Physics. It is also
very necessary to remember the relation between the three basic trigonometric identities.
General Tips for Mathematics
Start early. Learn and revise multiplication tables. Try and reduce the use of calculators and replace it with doing mathematical calculation
manually initially on paper and then mentally. Practice and practice more questions. Please remember the exam only requires estimated answers and not precise answers.
Conclusion
Mathematics although is a necessary skill required for Section III of the exam, it is not the most important component in this section of the GAMSAT. Over the years the number of questions requiring a considerable knowledge of mathematics has reduced.
